View data usage

The data usage breakdown can help to better understand and manage the data usage. Data usage is affected by activities such as watching live video, uploading recordings, and sending events to the portal.

To view the data usage of a dashcam:

Use the Search bar to find the name of the dashcam or select a group name to find the relevant dashcam. The list of views expands, enabling you to see the front (road-facing) and rear (in-cab) cameras, as well as any available auxiliary cameras.

Click DATA USAGE.

  • Live Video: The amount of data used from live video streaming, in bytes, for the current calendar month.

  • Video Events: The amount of data used from uploading video events, in bytes, for the current calendar month.

  • Recordings Uploaded: The amount of data used from uploading recordings, in bytes, for the current calendar month.

  • Record Streaming: The amount of data used from streaming recordings, in bytes, for the current calendar month.

  • Other Data: Includes necessary background processes that improve the device operation and increase service reliability.

The table provides a partial list of the "Other Data" background processes. All measurements and their relevance are estimates only, provided for illustrative purposes, and may vary significantly by customer.

Type of Data

Definition

Relevance

API Calls

Requests between devices and servers to exchange information, such as event uploads or status updates.

Necessary for real-time communication and system functionality, though not part of the core user data, like video or GPS.

GPS Data

Location data used to track devices in real-time.

Supports location services, but is separate from core media data.

Retry Mechanism

Automatically retries failed data transfers to increase the number of successful deliveries.

Improves data integrity, especially during network interruptions, but is not directly customer-facing.

Over-The-Air (OTA) Firmware Updates

Remote updates to device firmware, increasing the level of security and operation without manual intervention.

Critical for device maintenance, but occurs in the background.

Packet Headers and IP Protocol Packets

Metadata used to manage data transmission across networks.

Necessary for communication, but unrelated to the customer’s core experience.

Kernel Data Substitution

System data substituted for application data to optimize performance.

Required for system efficiency, but has no direct impact on the customer.
