These release notes describe the details of version 3.16 of the AI-12 dashcam:
NEW FEATURES
IPv6 Support with Automatic Fallback for T-Mobile SIMs
This release introduces native IPv6 support for AI-12 dashcams operating on T-Mobile networks, with automatic fallback to IPv4 whenever IPv6 is unavailable. The device automatically detects T-Mobile SIMs by their network identifiers (MCC/MNC or APN) and applies the appropriate protocol without requiring manual configuration. Partners operating in modern cellular environments benefit from improved network compatibility and future-proof connectivity while maintaining full backward compatibility.
Persistent Configurable Wi-Fi Hotspot Password
Administrators can now configure and set the dashcam Wi-Fi hotspot password remotely via the Surfsight API Tunnel. Unlike default rotating credentials, a custom password set through the API persists across device reboots and remains active until explicitly changed, disabled, or reset via factory restore. This provides predictable, reliable hotspot access for partner applications, in-cab tablets, and third-party telematics integrations.
Scheduled Daily Reboot for Wi-Fi AUX Cameras
Fleet managers can now configure an automated daily reboot schedule for paired Lytx Ability Wi-Fi AUX cameras remotely via cloud CGI commands. Scheduling periodic reboots ensures long-running secondary cameras clear memory buffers, maintain responsive video streams, and operate reliably across extended duty cycles without requiring manual physical intervention. (Requires Lytx Ability AUX firmware 0.31.0 or later.)
Wi-Fi AUX Session Keep-Alive and Clean Teardown
The AI-12 now actively manages RTSP streaming sessions to paired Wi-Fi AUX cameras using automated keep-alive polling and graceful session teardowns. This prevents orphan streaming sessions, eliminates video feed loss following transient in-cab Wi-Fi disruptions, and ensures rapid, seamless stream recovery when connectivity is restored.
Expanded Out-of-the-Box Carrier APN Profiles
This release expands built-in cellular support with pre-configured APN profiles across multiple global and regional carriers, enabling devices to connect immediately upon SIM insertion without manual APN provisioning:
- Vodafone: MCC 204 / MNC 04
- Claro Nicaragua: MCC 710 / MNC 21
- Tigo Nicaragua: MCC 710 / MNC 30
- T-Mobile: MCC 310 / MNC 260
- Comm Clouds / Optix (South Africa & Namibia): APN flolive.net | MCC/MNC 222/01, 001/20, 901/61
Enhanced SD Card Encryption for Auxiliary Cameras
This release updates the cryptographic storage architecture for paired Lytx Ability AUX camera footage, strengthening data security on local media. When an encryption passphrase is configured in the cloud portal or device API, encryption is applied automatically across all recorded auxiliary video files, ensuring sensitive footage remains protected at rest.
FIXES AND ENHANCEMENTS
Camera Reliability and Performance Improvements
This release improves how the AI-12 retrieves recordings from third-party auxiliary cameras (including GeniusSpy and AlwaysCare / CareDrive models). These updates enhance video continuity, reduce recording gaps, and allow the system to detect and recover from camera connectivity issues significantly faster. No action is needed. These changes will apply automatically.
Key Improvements:
Faster Recording Retrieval:
The device now scans only recent footage folders (the last 24 hours based on the latest recording) rather than parsing the full SD card history, significantly reducing the retrieval time from cameras with large amounts of stored footage.
Downloads no longer get stuck:
File downloads now include a 15-second network timeout, preventing indefinite hangs on poor connections and ensuring the system recovers reliably.
New video is picked up sooner:
The camera watcher now checks new recordings twice as frequently and reduces idle wait times, responds faster when footage becomes available, reducing delays in video delivery.
Offline cameras are flagged sooner:
Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) connection timeouts have been reduced from 60 seconds to 10 seconds, allowing offline or disconnected cameras to be identified and flagged much sooner than before.
General stability:
Improved how download tasks start and stop, and how the AI-12 keeps track of which files are still waiting. Together these reduce the chance of a recording being skipped, downloaded twice, or interrupted partway through.
Optimized Standby Transition Following Automatic Reboot
Previously, when a device performed an automatic maintenance reboot, it remained fully active for the standard configured idle-to-standby duration, causing unnecessary video recording and increased vehicle battery draw during parked periods.
With this update:
The AI-12 now transitions back to low-power standby significantly faster after an automatic reboot, bypassing redundant recording intervals. Partners should see reduced wear on SD cards and lower auxiliary battery consumption on parked vehicles.
Accurate Standby Power-Disconnect Event Reporting
In earlier builds, power-disconnect events occurring while the dashcam was in low-power standby mode could fail to trigger or report inaccurate telemetry.
With this update:
Power monitoring logic in standby mode has been refined to capture and report power-loss transitions accurately. Fleet managers receive dependable notifications when vehicle power is cut or tampered with while parked.
Regional Cloud Routing and Post-Maintenance Reconnection
Under specific network conditions, devices intermittently attempted connection to incorrect regional cloud endpoints (e.g., EU instead of US). Additionally, certain devices failed to restore cellular connectivity and GPS tracking automatically following regional cloud server maintenance windows.
With this update:
Cloud endpoint selection logic and maintenance recovery handlers have been hardened. Devices now reliably connect to their designated regional cloud and cleanly restore GPS telemetry and status reporting immediately following cloud maintenance events.
Cellular Session Stability and APN Handling
During dynamic carrier network transitions, devices could switch between APNs too frequently or establish duplicate concurrent sessions, leading to unstable data connections and inconsistent data-usage metrics.
With this update:
Modem APN negotiation and session lifecycle controls have been stabilized to prevent duplicate connections, while internal data-accounting routines have been refined for accurate data usage tracking.
Auxiliary Camera Pairing, Discovery, and File Sync
Previous releases could experience lost AUX camera pairings following firmware upgrades, redundant re-copying of already synchronized AUX video files to the primary dashcam, or incomplete camera list reporting during single-camera discovery scans.
With this update:
AUX connection state is preserved across firmware updates, redundant file sync cycles are eliminated to optimize primary SD card storage, and discovery routines reliably return the complete AUX camera inventory to the cloud.
AUX Video Downloader Reliability and File Integrity
The internal AUX footage transfer handler could encounter backoff crashes during high-volume downloads or attempt to fetch video files while they were still being actively written by the AUX camera, resulting in transfer backlogs and fragmented video clips.
With this update:
The transfer handler now validates that recording files are completely finalized before initiating transfers and processes download queues resiliently, eliminating footage backlogs and preventing video corruption.
Multi-Camera Video Overlay Timestamp Synchronization
Timestamp overlays on AUX footage could drift by approximately 30 minutes relative to road-facing and driver-facing cameras. Additionally, primary camera video timestamps could jump abruptly during long continuous loop-recording cycles.
With this update:
Time synchronization across all camera streams has been aligned to system time. Timestamps remain perfectly synchronized across primary and auxiliary cameras throughout continuous recording, simplifying incident investigations and multi-angle video review.
Event Video Upload and Playback Fidelity
Under specific circumstances, critical event clips (such as possible-accident triggers) required manual retrieval instead of uploading automatically, or uploaded as black, unplayable files despite raw footage existing on the SD card. Image pixelation was also observed affecting video overlay clarity.
With this update:
Event video clipping, compression, and automated upload pipelines have been overhauled. Event videos now generate with full visual clarity, preserve overlay sharpness, and upload promptly to the cloud portal for immediate playback.
System Stability, Boot-Loop Prevention, and Impact Protection
Intermittent spontaneous device reboots on earlier firmware versions could lead to boot-loop states or disrupt continuous recording immediately prior to high-G collision events, leaving impact windows unrecorded.
With this update:
Core kernel stability and watchdog routines have been substantially strengthened, eliminating spontaneous reboot triggers and ensuring uninterrupted video capture and buffer preservation through critical impact events.
Retention Policy Compliance and Encryption Uniformity
In certain edge cases, local video files were not pruned in strict accordance with the configured SD card retention schedule, or were written with inconsistent encryption parameters.
With this update:
The storage manager strictly enforces the configured retention window across all media and ensures uniform encryption parameters are applied to every recorded block.
Accurate Power-On Event Logic and Vehicle Battery Protection
False "Power On" notifications were occasionally generated when the camera was not yet fully operational, and extended idle activity in standby mode could lead to excess vehicle battery drain.
With this update:
Power On notifications are strictly gated until the device is confirmed online and operational. Standby current draw and wake routines have been optimized to protect vehicle battery health during extended parking periods.
Diagnostic Reporting and Audio Tone Classification
Diagnostic panels could reflect incorrect firmware/SVN revision strings, and in-cab alert beeps preceding lens obstruction or unbelted passenger events were misclassified under driver distraction alert categories.
With this update:
Diagnostic screens accurately display true firmware build revisions, and audio alert logging correctly categorizes in-cab warning tones to match the specific safety trigger.
KNOWN ISSUES
The following known issues have been identified in this release:
Recording
Loop recordings may end early or show short gaps (e.g., recurring 2-minute chunks) after an SD card write failure. An empty (0-byte) recording file may occasionally be generated. A brief gap may occur on the auxiliary camera in edge cases.
Aux Camera Device Behavior
The auxiliary camera firmware upgrade from version 0.35 may fail, leaving the camera on version 0.35 and unpaired. The issue originates from the auxiliary camera firmware and is unrelated to AI-12.
API & Data
If time is omitted from GET /devices/{imei}/cameras/2/snapshot, snapshots may be smaller but use more storage (specify time to avoid this).
Note
If you encounter any of these issues, we would appreciate your feedback along with supporting data — device serial number, approximate date and time of the occurrence, and the camera channels affected.
