AI-14 dashcams include a security feature that automatically replaces the dashcam’s default PIN codes with unique, randomly generated ones. This protects the dashcam and the fleet data behind it, and it is required for dashcams deployed in the EU under EU product security regulations (CE RED).
This requirement applies only to dashcams installed in the EU cloud. Dashcams installed elsewhere are not affected and continue to use the default PIN as before.
To make sure this protection does not get in the way of installation, a two-hour grace period applies after an EU dashcam first connects to the cloud. This guide explains how that works, what it means for your installation process, and what to keep in mind on-site.
NOTE: PIN randomization applies only to dashcams installed in the EU cloud. There is no change to your process for installations in any other region.
Why PIN Randomization Is Required
Every AI-14 dashcam ships with a known default admin PIN and driver PIN. Left unchanged, a default PIN is a security gap — anyone with the same dashcam model would know it. To help Lytx products meet certain EU security requirements, including CE RED, Lytx requires the dashcam’s default PIN to be replaced.
At the same time, installation partners reported that losing access to the default PIN too early makes it difficult to complete setup on-site. This update balances both needs.
How PIN Randomization Works
This process applies specifically to Surfsight AI-14 dashcams being installed in the EU. When one of these dashcams is activated and connects to the cloud for the first time:
- The dashcam keeps its default PIN active for a two-hour window.
- Your installer can use the default admin and driver PIN to complete setup during this window, just as before.
- After two hours, the dashcam automatically generates a new, unique PIN and applies it. No action is needed from your team.
- If installation is already complete before the two hours are up, nothing changes for your workflow.
Installation can proceed exactly as it does today, as long as it is completed within the two-hour window.
What to Keep in Mind On-Site
- This applies only to dashcams being installed in the EU — there is no change to your process for installations elsewhere.
- For EU installations, plan to complete setup within two hours of the dashcam’s first cloud connection.
- Avoid manually changing the admin or driver PIN during this window — let the automatic process handle it once installation is done.
- If an EU dashcam is factory reset during installation, its PIN is randomized immediately as part of the reset. This is expected behavior and part of the same security protection.
- No customer or installer action is required to trigger the PIN update — it happens automatically in the background.
